Why do Indian men and women wear marks (tilak, pottu and the like) on the forehead?

So you ended up getting a mark on your forehead by hands of priest during a religious celebration or ceremony in western countries like USA ? And, before going to the office or shopping your top most step would be to wash out such mark also known as Tilak. Yes ! You have genuine reason to do that. The reason : As Indian or Hindu, most likely you don’t know how to explain it to others what this mark on your forehead means ? Why Indians do Namaste ?

Sometime a colleague or a coworker from different culture ask you variety of questions on Indian culture or living style, since this culture is so much inherent in your life style that you know meaning of it but cannot explain it in a plain language.
For Indian it is better to know the culture so that it can be explained in a plain language to others. And for non-Indian manager, having such knowledge would add a lot of social value in dealing with employees and contractors of Indian origin.
